Safety Guidelines

The Los Angeles Public Health Department has declared a Local Health Emergency and issued a Public Health Officer Order in response to the widespread impacts of the ongoing fires and air quality conditions. These fire events pose a significant health and safety risk for our patients and residents across Southern California.

To protect yourself and loved ones, follow the guidelines below:

  • Stay indoors to limit your exposure to the smell of smoke, ash, and other fire-related particles in the air, especially if you have heart, lung, or other chronic health conditions, are elderly, or have children.

  • Keep indoor air clean by closing windows and doors. Use air conditioners that recirculate air to filter out harmful particles. Be sure to check and replace air filters regularly. If available, use a HEPA air purifier to further reduce indoor particles.

  • If you must go outside, wear an N95 or P100 mask.

  • Avoid using fireplaces, candles, or vacuums. Clean dusty surfaces with a damp cloth and don’t smoke.

  • If you experience symptoms like severe coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, palpitations, nausea, or unusual fatigue, contact your doctor or go to urgent care. For life-threatening symptoms, call 911.

  • Keep an eye on the air quality in your area and follow all safety recommendations issued by local health and safety entities.

  • Those returning to a property damaged or destroyed by fire should follow the Los Angeles Department of Public Health safety guidelines

  • Ensure you adhere to proper smoke and soot cleaning techniques.

  • When inspecting damage, take property assessment safety precautions

  • For those living with a disability, emergency preparedness guidelines and other resources are available.

  • If your children are struggling emotionally, discover ways to help validate and improve their mental health.
