Uplifting Communities Through Policy, Advocacy, and Civic Engagement

AltaMed is a private, nonprofit organization recognized as exempt from Federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. At AltaMed, we are devoted to helping our communities live healthy lives and reach their full potential no matter who they are, where they come from, or the language(s) they speak. We provide culturally sensitive care in overlooked and underserved communities, focusing on dismantling policies and systems that negatively impact its residents. Our goal is to replace these policies with equitable solutions that bring about transformational change.

We know we cannot do it alone. This is why we develop and promote people-centered programs that engage, cultivate, and empower our patients, community members, staff, and allies. Through these initiatives, we enable our patients to participate in voting, being counted in the decennial census and redistricting so they can make their voice heard. We help train community leaders and the next generation of advocates, and work closely with our elected officials and community partners on policies that uplift individuals and families.AltaMed may take positions on or advocate with regard to public policy issues pertinent to its mission, consistent with the requirements of applicable Federal and state law. However, AltaMed conducts all of its activities in an entirely nonpartisan manner. AltaMed may acknowledge the elected officials, who support us, but we do not endorse, support, or oppose candidates for public office, nor do we intervene in any election on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate or political party.

Civic Engagement

At AltaMed, we believe that civic engagement is a catalyst for change and health equity. It is why we empower our communities to participate in the democratic process. We encourage people to make their voices heard in local, primary, midterm and general elections. Through our civic engagement efforts, we provide our neighbors the tools to play an active role in their society so they can elect public officials willing to champion the issues that really matter to them. We are dedicated to informing the individuals, families, and communities we serve on these issues. And we are committed to providing them with the tools they need to make a difference.

Affordable Care

Protecting the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Medi-Cal

Even though Medi-Cal and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) make life better for millions by creating fair access to essential health coverage, they are frequently under attack. Protecting the ACA and ensuring Medi-Cal continues to be funded and expanded is crucial to our communities, as they rely on these services to live healthier, more productive lives. The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or the Healthcare Reform, is a law passed by President Barack Obama in 2010. Its basic goals are to help more people get coverage, ensure health plans provide certain essential benefits, and help control costs for everyone.

The expansion of safety net programs, such as Medi-Cal, is a top priority for AltaMed to ensure everyone has access to affordable and quality care without exception.

Telemedicine

Telemedicine

The shift to telemedicine has been a life-saving solution for our patients, as it provides them with urgent, on-demand care, in the safest environment. This is why we are working to expand our capacity. When things changed, AltaMed quickly pivoted to telemedicine as a way to keep our members safe, and the service has become a vital part of our delivery of care. While we expand both our capacity and offer, we are making sure the patient’s experience remains personal, equitable, and thorough, always with the same level of care AltaMed members know and trust.

Covid Response

COVID-19 Response, Testing, and Vaccines

Even in a region as rich and diverse as Southern California, the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affected communities of color, but our agile, responsive rollout of COVID-19 testing, and services was such that it can now serve as a model for other health systems and FQHCs to replicate around the nation. Today, we are looking for ways to prevent future crises.

Health Center Funding

Health Center Funding

Despite recent successes, having consistent and robust health center funding continues to be crucial. We work with public and private sector leaders, as well as policy makers at every level of government to demonstrate the importance and impact of our efforts, all while looking for new streams of support.

Workforce Development

Workforce Development

We are committed to ensuring our patients receive the best care possible, that we stay culturally relevant, and that our clinical workforce is reflective of our community. AltaMed is helping equip the next generation of socially aware, culturally competent physicians and health care leaders. And it is actively generating solutions to help fill the gaps we have in this space.

Our programs are aimed at nurturing local talent. Because, if we can create well-paying jobs in our communities, and form professionals who advocate for our members, we’ll develop a win-win ecosystem for everyone
