Vision
Sin Vergüenza is a thought provoking, cutting edge drama that uses storytelling to tackle shame and stigma associated with HIV within the Latino community. With a vision to increase HIV awareness and reduce HIV stigma, AltaMed created and produced this one of a kind bilingual telenovela filled with drama and suspense. It was designed as an educational tool to draw in audiences and provoke discussion on HIV prevention and treatment nationwide.
History of Sin Vergüenza
AltaMed’s English and Spanish telenovela web-series Sin Vergüenza (Without Shame) was developed to address the impact HIV has on the Latino community. Now in its second season, Sin Vergüenza highlights the importance of obtaining HIV medical treatment and support for disclosure and acceptance of dealing with a diagnosis. Stigma and shame continue to be the greatest obstacle for persons living with HIV. This series highlights those struggles and encourages the community to recognize the resiliency that exists in all.
For nearly 30 years, AltaMed has been one of the largest HIV/AIDS care providers in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, serving Latino, multi-ethnic and underserved communities. AltaMed’s services include HIV testing , HIV specialty care, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and other prevention services, along with support services for those living with HIV including behavioral health and case management.
Characters
The Salazar Family
ADRIANA (mamá)
A committed wife and mother who is proud of her family’s accomplishments and hopes for a bright future for her children. Troubled by the strain in her marriage, she begins to question her husband’s fidelity and quickly unravels more than she expected to find.
CÉSAR (papá)
A husband and father who is an integral part of the family until his secrets come to light. Troubled by the harm he caused himself and his family, Cesar spirals out of control and doesn’t know if he could ever make things right again.
ESTHER (abuela)
The much loved abuela (grandmother) and family matriarch. Esther is a traditional woman but her views are forced to change when her family’s reality begins to change.
ENRIQUE (hijo)
César and Adriana’s openly-gay son. The family is accepting of his sexuality, except his father. He soon discovers the underlying reasons for his father’s rejection and finds himself caught in the middle of his family’s despair. How will he prevail as HIV begins to creep into his life?
CHRISTINA (hija)
A bright and attractive young woman trying to navigate college while helping her parents with the family business. Christina has been dating her boyfriend Hector for some time but his indiscretions become a source of tension and conflict. With her parents’ relationship crumpling, she is left question her own relationship.
Paco Farias
Paco directed the cinematic vision of Sin Vergüenza. He began directing in 2006 and is currently developing pilot scripts with his writing partner, Jennifer Stetson. Originally an actor, he received his BA in Drama from Stanford University and an MFA in Drama from the University of Minnesota.

LA Clinic Launches HIV Telenovela
The serialized drama, “Sin Verguenza” (Without Shame), follows one fictional family, the Salazars, who live in East Los Angeles. The story lines are based on experiences by patients at the clinic, AltaMed, and cover such topics as infidelity, stigma and family secrets. The four-episode show — in both English and Spanish — is part of a public health campaign to promote HIV prevention, encourage patients to get tested and urge patients with HIV to seek medical care, clinic staff said. The clinic used a federal grant to produce the show, which is airing on YouTube and which clinic officials hope will get picked up by a local television station.
