Sports Medicine Fellowship Program

Program Highlights 

Our fellowship is designed to provide a well-rounded sports medicine education with a focus on serving our community and advancing clinical skills. Key features include: 

  • Primary Clinical Setting — Fellows work within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), gaining valuable experience in both continuity clinics and sports medicine clinics.

  • Protected Didactic Time — We provide dedicated time for structured learning, ensuring fellows have ample opportunity to engage with both academic and clinical material.

  • Diverse Rotations — Fellows will rotate through a variety of settings, including academic medical centers, community-based clinics, and private practices, offering a broad perspective on sports medicine.

  • Community-Oriented Faculty — Our program faculty are deeply committed to providing high-quality care to underserved populations and mentoring the next generation of sports medicine physicians.

Dr. Daniel Diaz is a dedicated sports medicine physician and educator, serving as the Program Director for the AltaMed Sports Medicine Fellowship. With a deep commitment to both medical education and improving healthcare access for underserved communities, Dr. Diaz brings a wealth of experience and passion to his role at AltaMed.

Dr. Diaz earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, Western University of Health Sciences, followed by a Family Medicine residency at Loma Linda University Health and a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His academic involvement extends to his roles as Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Medicine, and Community Faculty at Keck Medicine of the University of Southern California.

A strong advocate for health equity, Dr. Diaz’s commitment to AltaMed aligns with his desire to serve diverse and underserved communities in Los Angeles. His work at AltaMed is driven by a mission to increase access to high-quality sports medicine care for all patients, regardless of socioeconomic status. This dedication to service is rooted in his personal and professional commitment to bridging the gap in healthcare disparities and providing compassionate, comprehensive care to his patients.

Dr. Diaz’s passion for sports medicine and his commitment to equitable healthcare access drive his work as a medical director, physician, and educator, empowering the next generation of sports medicine physicians to prioritize both clinical excellence and community care.

Dr. Hernandez is a first-generation college graduate from Santa Ana, California, humbled and honored with the opportunity to provide the utmost care for our most diverse of patient populations.  In an optimistic attempt to inspire change, help heal and instill a sense of hope into our community, Dr. Hernandez is dedicated in his craft in never losing sight of the patient behind illness or ailment.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Neuroscience from the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Hernandez attended medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine.  Committed to returning home to Southern California, Dr. Hernandez completed his residency in Family Medicine at Adventist Health White Memorial, providing medical care to some of our most underserved populations.  With a keen interest in sports medicine, Dr. Hernandez completed his Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship training at Eisenhower Medical Center, receiving specialized training in diagnostic and procedural musculoskeletal ultrasound.

Dr. Hernandez prides himself in providing attentive medical care and educating patients, step-by-step, alongside their therapeutic and rehabilitative journeys, all while providing educational support for the AltaMed Family Medicine Residency and AltaMed Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship programs.

Dr. Marvin Valencia is a board-certified Family Medicine and Sports Medicine physician, deeply committed to advancing the field of sports medicine through education and mentorship. He currently serves a faculty member of the AltaMed Sports Medicine Fellowship, where he is dedicated to training the next generation of sports medicine physicians.

Dr. Valencia earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Lincoln Memorial University, DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, and completed his Family Medicine residency at Adventist Health White Memorial in Los Angeles, a program known for its commitment to serving underserved populations. He further specialized in Primary Care Sports Medicine during his fellowship at the University of Texas, Austin, where he gained comprehensive experience in treating athletes across various levels of competition.

In addition to his educational roles, Dr. Valencia is a team physician for USA Rugby, bringing his expertise to the international stage. His involvement in high-level sports and commitment to fostering a collaborative learning environment for fellows demonstrates his passion for both clinical excellence and the development of future sports medicine leaders.

Victoria has five years of experience as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) assistant. Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Psychology, she brings a unique perspective to patient care and communication.

Victoria is excited to leverage her healthcare experience to support the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. In this position, she is committed to enhancing program efficiency, improving the fellowship experience for participants, and cultivating strong connections with fellow healthcare professionals.

Driven by a mission to help underserved communities, Victoria is eager to gain more knowledge on how to support healthcare providers in achieving this goal. With a keen interest in sports medicine and some background in healthcare, Victoria is eager to making a positive impact in the field. By applying her program management skills and knowledge of healthcare practices, she aims to support the program director and providers effectively.

From a young age, Victoria has been passionate about sports, playing volleyball and soccer through high school and into college. This athletic background has not only instilled a strong sense of teamwork and discipline but also fueled her interest in sports medicine.

In her free time, Victoria enjoys a well-rounded mix of activities that foster both connection and relaxation. Whether it’s hanging out with friends or working out or playing soccer to stay active, she values spending quality time with loved ones. Evenings often find herself cozying up with to watch movies and shows, creating a perfect blend of entertainment. Additionally, she loves to unwind by cooking delicious meals and savoring a good glass of wine, making each gathering a delightful culinary experience.

Dr. Priya Shah was born and raised in the Bay Area, California. She grew up playing basketball which initially spurred her interest in sports related injuries and their prevention. Dr. Shah knew that she wanted to pursue a career within healthcare and explore more of the world, and thus took her talents to Saint Louis University for her undergraduate education. Keen on service and leadership, she became involved with the Health Resource Center, providing patients education about balanced healthy lifestyles along with being a board member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, the national health preprofessional honor Society. She continued to play intramural basketball and remained physically active as a dancer and choreographer of Bhangra dance.

After graduation, Dr. Shah moved back to the Bay Area and worked as a patient care coordinator for Premise Health @ Google Wellness Centers, learning about the ins and outs of primary care within the corporate setting.

She then moved to right outside of Las Vegas to attend Touro University Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine for her medical education, and remained in the desert, but a bit more south in Phoenix, Arizona to complete her Family Medicine residency training at Abrazo Health where she also served as Chief Resident during her third year.

Dr. Shah has an interest in concussion care, hand and upper extremity, shockwave therapy, women’s sports injuries, and the FQHC and minority population, and is excited to be taking care of these populations within Southern California through the musculoskeletal lens. 
When she’s not working, she loves to cook up a delicious brunch spread for her friends and family, travel, explore new cultures through food and beverages (she’s Yelp Elite!), shoot hoops, learn golf and pickleball, go hiking, and read.

Randall Rodriguez, MD

Dr. Randall Rodriguez earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Texas A&M University – Kingsville, and his Doctor of Medicine from The Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine. He completed his Family Medicine residency at the Dell Family Medicine Residency at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was actively involved in the sports medicine track. During his residency, Dr. Rodriguez volunteered for a variety of sideline and mass event coverage, including Round Rock ISD football, Austin Stars Hockey, Austin Gilgronis Rugby, and the Austin City Limits Festival. His commitment to the values of family medicine was recognized with the Blackstock Family Medicine Award, an honor given annually to the resident who best exemplifies compassion, empathy, and patient advocacy.

Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Rodriguez enjoys an active lifestyle, engaging in watersports like paddle boarding and surfing, as well as playing soccer and volleyball. He is also an avid hiker, karaoke enthusiast, and a dedicated fan of the University of Texas Longhorns athletics. Hook 'em!
