A Tribute to 100 Years: PACE Celebrates Aquilina Correa de Cardo’s Remarkable Life

June 26, 2025

At AltaMed PACE in South Los Angeles, the morning of June 26 was anything but ordinary. Staff, family, and friends gathered to celebrate a truly inspiring milestone: the 100th birthday of Aquilina Correa de Cardo, a beloved participant in the Program of AllInclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE).

PACE staff transformed the center into a charming tea-party scene, sprinkled with floral decorations, dainty teapots, and a beautiful cake. To kick off the celebration, certificates of recognition from elected officials were presented to Aquilina—honoring not only her resilience, wisdom, and strength, but also the extraordinary and rare milestone of turning 100.

Then came a touching moment that hushed the room: Aquilina rose and recited poetry. In a surprising show of strength, she captivated everyone in attendance. Soon, the room filled with warmth and applause – followed by laughter and music, as she and her friends and family took to the dance floor.

Born in Colombia, Ms. de Cardo is the devoted mother of ten and the cherished matriarch of 18 grandchildren. For the past three years, she has been a vibrant member of the AltaMed PACE program, which helps her stay active and connected to her community.

At PACE, Aquilina enjoys her favorite activities: dancing, painting, weaving, and playing Bingo. She stays physically active through group exercises, and she credits her long, joyful life to optimism and a consistent sleep routine.

Ms. de Cardo’s daughter, Maria Viviana Cardona, speaks fondly of the care her family receives through the program: “The staff is respectful and attentive,” she says. “They help keep my mother healthy and happy.” PACE is an interdisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, therapists, social workers, and nutritionists working together to deliver care tailored to each participant, ensuring seniors are never alone on their journey through aging.

Aquilina’s story is a testament to what’s possible when community, care, and compassion come together.

Happy 100th birthday, Aquilina! You are an inspiration—and a shining example that dignity, joy, and purpose can thrive at any age.
