COMMERCE, Calif. (July 9, 2019) – It is with profound sadness that the leadership and staff of AltaMed Health Services offer their heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Dr. Frank Meza, whose unexpected passing was reported on Thursday, July 4. Dr. Meza was currently serving as the Commerce-based AltaMed’s interim chief medical officer, overseeing medical care and community health to more than 300,000 patients. AltaMed is the nation’s largest federally qualified health center.
Prior to serving as AltaMed’s interim chief medical officer, Dr. Meza was a consulting medical director for Quality and Health Equity and spent six years as Chairman of the Board of Directors at AltaMed, a non-profit organization. This, following a long and rich career with Kaiser Permanente, where he had been awarded several honors, including Physician of the Year.
“We are all in great pain over the unexpected loss of our colleague and friend, Dr. Meza,” said Cástulo de la Rocha, president and chief executive officer of AltaMed. “He dedicated most of his life working to close health disparities in our communities, and he mentored students and physicians from the community to address issues affecting our population. He was an excellent physician and leader who challenged all of us to develop new ways to improve access to high quality patient care. I will deeply miss his warmth, his kindness, and his willingness to invest so much passion into our community. He is irreplaceable,” added de la Rocha.
“He was a one-of-a kind champion of pushing the envelope of culturally appropriate medical care,” de la Rocha said. “He elevated the quality of health care being delivered to all, regardless of their social or financial status. He lifted all of us up on his personal and professional shoulders to provide better care no matter where or how you lived. His legacy is instilled in the hearts of many of our physicians and team members who will carry his passion forward.”
AltaMed will be honoring the legacy of Dr. Meza through a community event or dedication in the coming weeks.
