AltaMed Health Services Corporation Receives Grant to Expand Mobile Health Access for Vulnerable Communities

$1.8 million grant from HealthNet and Centene Foundation enhances delivery of preventative care services to underserved populations

LOS ANGELES – June 4, 2025 -- AltaMed Health Services Corporation, one of the nation’s largest federally qualified community health centers, has received a $1.8 million grant from Health Net and the Centene Foundation to support the expansion of its Mobile Outreach and Vaccine Education Services Program (MOVE). This one-year grant will enhance infrastructure development and capacity-building efforts aimed at delivering preventive care to underserved populations across California.

AltaMed President and CEO Cástulo de la Rocha expressed gratitude for the support, "This generous funding from Health Net and the Centene Foundation enables us to extend our reach and deliver critical health services to those who need it most. For more than 50 years, AltaMed has filled a gap in the need for community health services and is diligently focused on providing preventative care services to vulnerable populations. Together, we are working to achieve a more equitable health care system in California."

The MOVES Program delivers essential health services directly to communities, utilizing mobile units to reach individuals where they live, learn, work, play, and worship. Services offered include diabetes screenings, blood pressure checks, health education, and flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, with a focus on seniors and individuals with mobility challenges.

Expanding primary care access beyond traditional clinics, the MOVES Program aligns with AltaMed's mission to reduce health disparities and promote health equity for underserved populations. Through community partnerships and health campaigns, the program enhances care access and fosters engagement.

The $1 million grant will be allocated for the acquisition of a mobile unit to enhance outreach capabilities, staffing to ensure adequate service delivery, and annual operating expenses. Additionally, $700,000 is allocated for program coordination, providing one program coordinator per partner to manage community events, coordinate additional services and serve as a liaison with community partners.

AltaMed provides access to pediatrics, primary care, Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), dental, behavioral health, HIV/AIDS care, and pharmacy services for more than 500,000 patients in Los Angeles and Orange counties, regardless of their ability to pay.
