LOS ANGELES – AltaMed Health Services, the nation's largest independent federally qualified community health center, has appointed Ilan Shapiro, MD, FAAP, FACHE, as Chief Health Correspondent and Medical Affairs Officer.

“Dr. Shapiro has become a familiar, trusted source of vital information for the communities we serve,” said AltaMed Health Services President and CEO Cástulo de la Rocha.  "His passion to serve our patients and conviction to educate the community on important public health issues makes him the right candidate to represent AltaMed and advance our external, policy and community relations initiatives.”

Since joining AltaMed in 2016, as Medical Director of Health Education and Wellness, Dr. Shapiro has created programs and services that have expanded access to health services to improve patient outcomes. During the pandemic, he led the outreach and education department through the transition to using digital platforms to address community social determinants of health. This includes support groups, weight management programs, long-term care, patient advocacy and connection to food services, social support and other essential resources.

During his tenure, Dr. Shapiro has become a highly-sought after expert source and now makes almost daily appearances on local and national television and radio. He has developed key relationships with top-tier media outlets, delivering bi-lingual medical information on trending health topics to audiences all over the world. He has collaborated with local, state and federal health agencies to craft and disseminate vital public health information throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Access to health care is a vital human right and necessity,” said Dr. Shapiro. “It is my honor to continue to champion the work my colleagues and I do each day to ensure our communities have access to the health care and important resources.”

Dr. Shapiro has spent his entire career providing care to medically underserved populations. Prior to joining AltaMed, Dr. Shapiro worked for the Mexican Secretary of Health as the liaison between Mexico and the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. Shapiro also served as an Advisor for the Foreign Affairs and Health Mexican Ministries. In 2011, he was invited to join the White House Hispanic Policy Group and help raise awareness for the Affordable Care Act. He is the recipient of the Othli Award, the highest civilian honor from the Mexican Federal Government and the American Academy of Pediatrics Holroyd-Sherry Award that recognizes his ability to harness the media to deliver important children’s health information.

Dr. Shapiro’s work has created binational public health programs to improve the health of Hispanic communities on both sides of the border.
