AltaMed Health Services CEO Cástulo de la Rocha Statement on Gubernatorial Recall Election Results

Septiembre 16, 2021

California voters up and down the state turned out to vote in the recall election, in unprecedented numbers.

As the largest federally qualified health center in California, serving some of the most underserved communities in the state, AltaMed Health Services worked tirelessly to remind our more than 400,000 patients and members, 3,100 employees, and thousands of neighbors and supporters that democracy works best when we all participate. Our nonpartisan educational outreach efforts reached close to 5 million Latinos in Los Angeles and Orange counties with critical election-related information using our five-touch integrated civic engagement model.

We congratulate Governor Gavin Newsom on his victory and look forward to continuing to work with him as he champions COVID-19 vaccinations, vaccine equity, and affordable access to health care for all. We share his commitment to addressing the social determinants of health by prioritizing issues like housing, education, immigrant rights, and infrastructure. I personally look forward to working with him and his administration on important health system issues, like increasing accessibility to culturally competent health care, eliminating language deserts, and addressing the Latino physician shortage and health care workforce shortages statewide.

Similarly, we look forward to continuing to work with our community health center partners throughout the state of California to ensure that every health center can also serve as a civic engagement hub, where those often underserved and under-reached can access civic education tools and feel empowered to vote in every special, midterm, local, and general election.

AltaMed Health Services believes the responsibility we hold to our patients and community members does not end when they leave our clinics. Our efforts to empower them to be actively engaged in their communities have proven successful and will continue to be at the core of everything we do.

Onward to 2022!
