Become an AltaMed COVID-19 Vaccine Volunteer

AltaMed is hosting multiple COVID-19 vaccination sites in the counties of Los Angeles and Orange, and AltaMed needs your help! Specifically, AltaMed is seeking individuals, 18 years of age or older, to generously donate their time and effort and volunteer with this humanitarian and public service project.

Who is eligible to volunteer?

To serve as a volunteer, you must be 18 years of age or older and a licensed medical professional authorized to administer vaccines in California. This includes physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, pharmacists, and respiratory therapists. Medical students, nursing students, and pharmacy students will also be considered.

A complete list of authorized licensees is available on the California Department of Public Health website. In addition, the California Department of Consumer Affairs has issued a number of waivers related to who is qualified to order and administer COVID-19 vaccines.

What kinds of roles will volunteers play?

Volunteers will support with both clinical and non-clinical roles. Both are described below.

Clinical Roles

Clinical volunteers are needed to (1) prepare and draw the vaccine, (2) monitor vaccine temperature, (3) administer the vaccine, and (4) screen people for vaccine reactions.

Non-Clinical Roles

Non-clinical volunteers are needed to perform tasks in support of AltaMed’s mass vaccination effort, including assisting with (1) wayfinding, (2) screening people’s temperature, (3) conducting check-ins, (4) helping move / organize supplies, and (5) screening people for vaccine reactions.

Things to Know

  • Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Volunteers must register.
  • Volunteers will receive training as needed.
  • Volunteers will be provided personal protective equipment as needed.
  • Volunteers can receive liability coverage if they complete required paperwork.
  • Volunteers will not be provided any pay or other form of compensation for performing the volunteer services and should not expect any such payment for their donated time and effort, as part of this humanitarian and public service project.
  • A full volunteer shift is 8-10 hours and the possibility of part-time shifts can be explored.
  • Volunteers will be supervised by AltaMed.
  • Volunteers may be eligible to receive a vaccine after committing to three volunteer shifts and completing their first shift.
