Make Sure Your Child Keeps Those Pearly Whites Intact
February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and we want to ensure that your children have happy and healthy smiles.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 5 children ages 5 to 11 have at least one untreated cavity. Untreated cavities can lead to problems with eating, speaking and learning. Additionally, untreated decay can lead to major health problems and even death.
Here are a few tips to help your children maintain beautiful smiles and avoid potential health problems:
- Have your child brush their teeth three times a day
- Limit sugary foods and drinks, like candy, soda and juice
- Take your child for a dental checkup every six months
- Ask your child’s dentist about sealants, which can protect your child’s teeth from cavities

We're Here to Help Get You Through the Flu Season
Flu season is more severe than in years past and unfortunately, it started earlier than expected. More patients are also being hospitalized with flu-like symptoms.
With flu symptoms spreading throughout California at a faster pace, AltaMed wants to ensure that our patients are protected against the flu virus.
It’s important to take these steps to ensure you stay healthy and avoid the spread of disease:
- If you haven’t received the flu vaccine, go to your nearest AltaMed location and get a flu shot.
- If you are feeling sick or have been diagnosed with the flu, stay home from work or school to avoid the spread of disease.
- Wash your hands consistently throughout the day, especially if you come in close contact with someone who is feeling under the weather.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth after touching something that may be contaminated with germs.
- Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces at home or at work, especially if someone is sick.
- Get plenty of sleep, drink a lot of hydrating fluids like water and tea and be sure to eat nutritious food to help protect your immune system.
If you believe you have the flu, come to one of our Urgent Care locations to be seen by a provider who can help manage your symptoms. For more helpful information about the flu, click here.

Brush Up on Your Family’s Oral Health!
A good smile can brighten anyone’s day, which is why it’s important to make sure your children feel good about flashing their toothy grins. The American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors February as National Children’s Dental Health Month to help raise awareness about the importance of oral health, and here at AltaMed, we couldn’t agree more with their mission.
It’s key to help your child develop a positive attitude towards dental care so that they maintain good habits through adulthood. With this year’s theme of “Choose Tap Water for a Sparkling Smile,” the ADA is drawing attention to the fact that the water that comes out of your home’s faucet has fluoride that strengthens teeth and helps prevent cavities. Best of all, it’s free!
Beyond brushing with tap water, making sure you and your family drink plenty of water is also an important part of maintaining oral health. By avoiding sugary drinks like soda and sweetened juices, you can help prevent tooth decay, the most common chronic yet preventable disease in children.
Also follow the 2x2 plan, which means brushing twice a day, after breakfast and before bed, for at least two minutes using toothpaste with fluoride. And don’t forget to floss! Flossing removes food from between the teeth that toothbrushes just can’t reach.
To help celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month and encourage our young patients to take care of their choppers, on February 10 our dental locations will be giving away fun goodie bags with treats like toothpaste, toothbrushes, finger toothbrushes, dental floss, toothbrush covers, stickers and educational materials.
