How to Stay Safe from COVID-19 This Summer

Summer is finally here, with long days, gatherings, and maybe a well-deserved vacation. But there’s also a less-fun reality: COVID‑19 cases have begun increasing even during the warm season.

With that in mind, it's important to stay informed and take smart steps to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Why COVID‑19 Surges in Summer

Although it’s a common belief that viral infections slow in the summer, COVID‑19 doesn’t follow this pattern. In fact, COVID‑19 can peak at any time of year, especially when new variants spread or immunity fades.

Indoor events with limited ventilation, summer travel, and crowded gatherings can all contribute to a higher risk of infection.

How to Protect Yourself

There are several practical steps you can take to help reduce your risk of infection this summer:

  • Stay up to date with vaccines- Contact your provider to learn about available Covid-19 vaccines.
  • Practice good hygiene — Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before eating or after being in public spaces. Hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol is also effective.
  • Improve indoor air quality When possible, open windows and doors to bring in fresh air. Use HEPA filters or HVAC systems with MERV-13 filters to reduce airborne virus particles.
  • Stay home if you're sick — If you’re experiencing symptoms like fever, cough, or sore throat, stay home and take a COVID-19 test. Follow current respiratory illness guidelines to avoid spreading the virus.

Some situations require extra caution, even if you’re vaccinated:

  • Crowded indoor spaces like weddings, parties, or concerts
  • Traveling by plane, bus, or train
  • Spending time with vulnerable loved ones, such as older adults or people with weakened immune systems

In these cases, consider wearing a well-fitting mask (such as an N95 or KN95), keeping some distance from others, and taking a COVID-19 test beforehand if possible.

What to Do If You Feel Sick

COVID‑19 symptoms can be mild or severe. Common signs include fever, cough, body aches, fatigue, sore throat, or congestion.

If you feel sick:

  • Take a test as soon as possible, especially if you’ve been exposed or are around high-risk individuals.
  • If you test positive, stay home and away from others. You can end isolation if your symptoms improve and you’ve been fever-free for 24 hours.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are over 50, pregnant, or have underlying health conditions. You may qualify for antiviral medications that are most effective when taken early.

Your Summer Safety Checklist

To stay safe and enjoy the season:

  • Get your updated COVID-19 vaccine
  • Use a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated places
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Keep air fresh indoors
  • Isolate and test if you have symptoms
  • Talk to a doctor if you're high-risk

These steps are simple, but they’ll make a big difference for you, your loved ones, and your entire community.
