Everything to Know about the New COVID-19 Vaccines
As we officially enter cold, flu, and COVID-19 season, health experts strongly recommend getting vaccinated. In August, the FDA approved updated COVID-19 vaccinations from Pfizer, and Moderna. These new vaccines are designed to defend against recent coronavirus variants and prevent severe illness, hospitalization, or death.
No matter your age, gender, or health history, getting an updated vaccine is the best way to stay protected all season long. Have questions? AltaMed is here to help you understand your options.
What exactly has the FDA approved?
The FDA has approved and authorized updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (2024-2025 formula) to target the Omicron KP.2 strain. Currently, Omicron KP.2 is among the most common strains infecting people in the United States.
Who are the manufacturers?
The vaccines were developed and manufactured by Moderna and Pfizer, all of which are American biotechnology companies. The new formula is designed to provide better protection against current COVID-19 variants.
Why are updated vaccines necessary?
Since the virus that causes COVID-19 continues to mutate, it’s important to have vaccines that match the current strains as closely as possible.
Unlike boosters, which strengthen immunity with the same formula, these updated vaccines are reformulated each year to target new variants. Last year’s vaccine was aimed at the XBB.1.5 variant, while this year’s vaccine targets Omicron KP.2.
Who should get the updated vaccine?
The CDC advises that everyone 6 months of age and older, receive the updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine. While everyone 6 months and older should prioritize getting the updated vaccine as soon as possible, higher risk groups include:
- Immunocompromised individuals
- People who have never received a COVID-19 vaccination
- People who have never been infected with COVID-19
- Individuals 65 years or older
- Residents of long-term care facilities
- People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant
Am I eligible?
Children six months to four years old should receive one to two doses depending on total previous vaccinations. If they have not been vaccinated against COVID-19 at any point, three doses of Pfizer or two doses of Moderna are recommended.
Anyone five years or older is eligible for the new vaccine if at least two months have passed since their last COVID-19 vaccination.
You can read more about eligibility guidelines on the FDA’s website.
If I recently had COVID-19, should I still get vaccinated?
If you recently tested positive for COVID-19, it’s still important to stay up to date on vaccines. However, experts recommend waiting one to three months before getting the updated vaccine to help with vaccine immune response. Reinfection is less likely in the weeks and months after recovering, but you might want to get vaccinated sooner than one to three months if:
- You’re at high risk of severe illness
- Someone close to you is at high risk
- COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are rising in your area
Are the vaccines safe?
Yes, the new vaccines use the same manufacturing and approval processes as previous ones, which have been safely administered to over 5.5 billion people.
What are the side effects?
The side effects of the new COVID-19 vaccines are expected to be like those of previous years. Common experiences include a sore arm, tiredness, headaches, or mild fever. These symptoms usually go away after a day or two.
Can I get my flu and COVID-19 vaccinations in one visit?
Yes, it's safe to get your COVID-19 and flu vaccines at the same time, according to the CDC. Experts highly recommend getting vaccinated against both viruses. The best time to schedule an appointment is September or October.
Does my insurance cover the vaccine?
COVID-19 vaccines are covered by insurance, including private insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid. Consult your insurance provider for more information.
Should I get a COVID-19 vaccine every year?
Just like with the flu, experts encourage you to receive updated vaccines when new presentations are available. This will help protect you, your family, and your community.
