California Wildfires: Staying Safe and Planning for The Future

Many of our communities have been devastated by the ongoing wildfire disaster. While first responders are still battling fires, you and your loved ones might be facing one of many different scenarios. Many residents have been evacuated or live in an area with an evacuation warning. Or, in worst-case scenarios, you or someone you know may have property damage or loss.

Even in the age of the internet and social media, you may not know what to do now. Here are a few things you can do to continue to stay safe, as well as resources for those directly facing the impacts of the fire.

Stay Alert and Follow Safety Guidelines

Fires are still ongoing. A good first step in staying safe is to make sure you and your family are prepared:

  • Get alerts — Make sure that you are signed up to receive safety alerts and up-to-date information for your area.
  • Communications plan — Landlines and cellular networks are often overwhelmed in times of disaster. Establishing a communications plan with your family and contacts and keeping a list of emergency numbers in your wallet will help you stay connected.
  • Stay aware of health risks — The possible health risks due to air quality during wildfires can’t be ignored. Stay vigilant with your daily habits and protection and be sure to follow all safety guidelines for outdoor activity.
  • Take caution when returning home — If your home has suffered fire damage, you should wait for appropriate clearances from fire safety professionals before returning home. Scan the area for any additional hazards such as remaining hot spots or downed power lines.

Insurance and Assistance

If you or someone you know has suffered property damage or loss due to wildfires, you should consult your current insurance policies, as well as gather information about financial relief/assistance.

If insurance does not cover property damages, or there wasn’t a policy in place, impacted residents can apply for assistance through FEMA. The agency also offers recovery resources and a distress hotline.
