HIV/AIDS Programs & Services
AltaMed is the largest provider of comprehensive HIV/AIDS services for Latino, multi-ethnic and underserved communities in Los Angeles County. Our services include specialty care, treatment, prevention services, counseling, and access to clinical trials.
Our HIV/AIDS primary care clinics are staffed by expert teams of highly skilled professionals in HIV/AIDS prevention. AltaMed is committed to delivering the most advanced treatments to our patients in a supportive and caring environment.
AltaMed’s Outpatient Medical Program
- HIV Specialty Care: Offers the most advanced HIV/AIDS medical care and treatment plans available. AltaMed’s providers are leading experts in HIV/AIDS care. Services are available to low-income individuals regardless of their ability to pay.
- AIDS Drug Assistance Program: Access to HIV/AIDS treatment medications not covered through the patient’s own prescription plan or for individuals that do not otherwise have access to life saving medications.
- Support Services: Assists clients with supportive services that compliment or enhance patient care plans.
- Treatment, Education & Advocacy: Individual client support to enhance patients’ adherence to medications. Service includes medication education.
- Outpatient Case Management: Provides social or environmental case management support including referrals to available supportive services.
- Individual & Family Care Case Management: Provides supportive services to patients and their families to enhance the well-being of HIV positive individuals and affected individuals.
- Mental Health: Provides individual counseling to HIV positive persons dealing with new diagnosis, or who have issues that may affect their care.
AltaMed’s HIV/AIDS Prevention Programs
- Comprehensive Risk Counseling Services: A comprehensive 3 to 5 month program for HIV positive individuals and those at-risk of contracting the disease. Services include in-depth risk reduction counseling sessions and referrals to mental health and other supportive services.
- Street Smart: A specially-designed program for youth ages 13 to 24. This 8-session group promotes self-awareness, self-esteem, and reducing risky behavior.
- HIV/AIDS Mobile Testing Unit: AltaMed’s mobile testing unit travels to various community locations including schools and drug treatment centers to deliver HIV/AIDS testing services to at-risk populations.
- Integrated Case Management: Offered to HIV positive youth ages 13-24 who have not accessed care or have discontinued their care. This program equips and empowers youth to take charge of their medical needs. Case managers refer clients to ongoing support services.
- Mental Health Services: Provides counseling for individuals dealing with multiple and complex issues that directly affect his/her mental well-being.

AltaMed’s HIV/AIDS programs are funded with Federal Ryan White Care Act dollars. Prevention services are funded by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the Los Angeles County Office of AIDS Programs and Policy (OAPP), as well as the Department of Health Services (DHS).
