Rubber Ducks Race “Heart-to-Heart” to Keep Huntington Beach Clinic Afloat
April 19, 2012 - Press Release
Duck-a-Thon™ Fundraiser Returns for its 20th Anniversary to Support AltaMed’s Huntington Beach Community Clinic
Thousands of ducks will flood the Huntington Beach Pier May 19-20, 2012 turning the ocean into a sea of yellow for the annual Duck-a-Thon™ to raise funds for AltaMed’s Huntington Beach Community Clinic (HBCC).
It’s difficult to believe, but there are nearly 662,000 uninsured in Orange County, many of whom are women and children. During one of the most economically devastating times in the United States the number of uninsured continues to grow while access to health care is shrinking. AltaMed is the largest health provider to the underinsured population in Orange and Los Angeles Counties and provides a safety net to the community.
The three day Duck-a-Thon™ begins Friday evening with a Sunset Wine Tasting at the Pier from 6-8 p.m. The main rubber duck race begins on Saturday, May 19 at 3 p.m. when thousands of ducks race to the shore. The first 60 ducks that reach the shore earn prizes for their owners. On Sunday, May 20 at 1 p.m. hundreds of local companies and individuals race ducks for the coveted Golden Duck Traveling Trophy.
The event draws thousands of locals and visitors and has raised more than $3 million to care for needy families over the years. This year’s special "Heart-to-Heart" theme celebrates our 20th anniversary with ducks adorned with two hearts to signify our gratitude for the generous hearts of our supporters since 1992.
“The Duck-a-Thon™ is an exciting event that brings many in the community together year- after-year to enjoy a great weekend filled with activities to support our clinic and help keep our doors open to those with limited access to health care,” says Cástulo de la Rocha, AltaMed President/CEO.
